Acne is a skin condition in which the hair follicles become clogged with dead skin and oils. While effective treatments are available, acne can be a persistent problem. The bumps and pimples heal gradually, and when one seems to be going away, others begin to erupt.
Dermatologists at the PH Dermatology Cancer and Laser Surgery Center provide safe and proven skin care treatments to patients in Palm Harbor, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Brandon, Tampa, Spring Hill, Riverview, Florida, and surrounding locations.
How do Dermatologists diagnose Acne?
A dermatologist will initially examine the patient’s skin to ensure that they have acne. At times, other skin conditions may appear similar to acne. In case the patient does have acne, the dermatologist will do the following:
Step 1: Grade the Acne: With grade 1 being mild acne and grade 4 being severe acne,
Step 2: Determine the type or types of acne on the patient’s skin.
How do Dermatologists treat Acne?
There are many effective treatments for acne available today. But this does not imply that every acne treatment works for everyone with acne. However, it does mean that nearly every case of acne can be controlled.
Individuals with mild acne will have a few blemishes. They may have blackheads, whiteheads, papules, and/or pustules (also known as pimples). Mild acne can often be treated with products that can be bought without a prescription. A product with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid usually clears the skin. However, the acne will not clear overnight.
Contrary to claims, acne treatment does not work overnight. At-home treatment will need four to eight weeks to create improvements. When the acne clears, the patient must continue to treat the skin to prevent flare-ups.
When to See a Dermatologist
If a person has numerous acne, nodules, or cysts, an OTC medication may not be effective. In such cases, it may be advisable to consult a dermatologist. For the treatment of acne, dermatologists offer the following treatments:
Topical Acne Treatment
A majority of acne treatments are applied to the skin. The dermatologist may refer to this as a topical treatment. There are various topical acne treatments available today. While some topical treatment helps eliminate the bacteria, others work on reducing oil.
The topical med may comprise prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide, a retinoid, or even salicylic acid. The dermatologist will determine what the patient needs.
Acne Treatments that work throughout the Body
When the patient has red, inflamed types of acne, drugs that work throughout the body may be necessary. This type of treatment is often required to treat acne nodules and cysts. The dermatologist may prescribe one or more of the following:
- Antibiotics: Help eliminate bacteria and reduce swelling.
- Birth control pills and other drugs that work on hormones: These can be helpful in the case of women.
- Isotretinoin: The only treatment that is effective on all causes of acne.
Procedures to Treat Acne
The dermatologist may treat the patient’s acne with a procedure that can be undertaken during an office visit, including:
Lasers and other light therapies: These devices eliminate the p. acnes bacteria. The dermatologist can determine whether this treatment is suitable for a specific patient.
Chemical peels: Chemical peels that dermatologists use cannot be purchased OTC. Dermatologists use chemical peels to address two types of acne, namely, papules, and blackheads.
Acne removal: The dermatologist may undertake a procedure known as “drainage and extraction” to remove large acne cysts. This procedure is helpful when the cyst in unresponsive to medication.
