Acne: Signs and Symptoms

-

Acne

Acne is the most commonly occurring skin condition in the US. While it is common, it may be challenging to get accurate information about the condition.

This can make it hard to get clearer skin. The following information offers detailed information on acne and how to treat it effectively.

Dermatologists at the PH Dermatology Cancer and Laser Surgery Center provide safe and proven skin care treatments to patients in Palm Harbor, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Brandon, Tampa, Spring Hill, Riverview, Florida, and surrounding locations.

Why Treat Acne?

Myths surrounding acne are as common as the condition itself. A common myth is that one has to let acne run its course.

But dermatologists understand that allowing acne to run its course is not always appropriate. The reasons for this are as follows:

  • In the absence of treatment, permanent scars, and dark spots may develop on the skin.
  • Acne treatment often improves an individual’s self-esteem.
  • There are various effective treatment options to combat acne.

More Women getting Acne

Acne is not a condition that afflicts only teenagers. An increasing number of women experience acne in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. While dermatologists are not sure about the reason for this occurrence, they certainly understand that adult acne can be especially frustrating.

Acne Signs

Many individuals believe that acne is just pimples. However, a person suffering from acne can have any of the following blemishes:

  • Whiteheads
  • Blackheads
  • Nodules
  • Papules
  • Pustules (commonly called pimples)
  • Cysts

Acne can develop on the neck, chest, back, upper arms, butt, and shoulders.

Acne Symptoms

The consequences of acne can be more than just blemishes. Studies indicate that people with acne can have:

Low self-esteem

Many individuals with acne report that their acne causes them to feel bad about themselves. They do not want to be with their friends due to their acne, and they miss school or work. Because of their acne, their grades can slide, and absenteeism can become an issue.

Depression

Many individuals with acne experience more than low self-esteem, and it can lead to a medical condition known as depression. The depression can be so severe that individuals may contemplate suicide. According to various studies, teens who believe that they have “bad” acne were likely to have suicidal thoughts.

Dark spots on the skin

These spots develop on the skin when the acne heals, and it may take many months or years for dark spots to subside.

Scars (permanent)

Individuals who get acne nodules and cysts often experience scars when the acne clears. These scars are preventable. If acne develops between the ages of 8 and 12 years, it is advisable to see a dermatologist.

In case someone in their family has acne nodules and cysts, a person should consult a dermatologist if they develop acne as this can help prevent the development of scars.

When to See a Dermatologist

If self-care measures are ineffective in clearing the acne, the patient should consult their primary care physician. They can prescribe stronger drugs. For acne that is persistent or severe, it is advisable to seek medical care from a doctor who is expert in skin (dermatologist).

Acne can persist for decades for many women, with breakouts common a week prior to menstruation. In women who use contraceptives, this type of acne tends to clear up without treatment. Sudden onset of severe acne in older adults may indicate an underlying condition warranting medical attention.
